Blog & Comments in Term 4

One of the reasons people create blogs, and post interesting things on their blogs, is to get other people to read and comment about the post. This enables people of all ages to share their thoughts and opinions with others. It allows people with similar likes to share information and ideas as well as allowing people learn about new topics they haven’t looked at or thought about in the past.

In Term 4 our class will be aiming to get more people from inside (other students) and outside (like your parents or family friends) our school to read our blogs by making interesting posts. The aim is to have the post generate sensible discussions through the comments section of the post. Each week we will have a prize for the most interesting/informative blog post that generates comments and a prize for the best comment on another classmates blog. It is important to make sure all blog posts and comments are in line with the blog rules (click here).

Let’s get blogging!

Text Adventures

Late in Term 3 we took a look at Text Adventures or Interactive Fiction. These are interactive adventure computer games where the player uses text commands to control what the character does. The player is given only a small amount of information to begin and need to work out which commands work and which don’t. From here it is up to them to explore the game.

We looked at Zork I in class and may look at it more in Term 4, but if you want to play it over the holidays or anytime at home, here are the two links. The first one has a range of Text Adventure games you can try, but I suggest you stick with Zork I and explore it more and more. The second link has the Zork trilogy (I, II & III).

Book Week included our dress up day where everyone can come as dressed as their favourite story character. Here is our class!

Posted by rosstoogood | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on July 31, 2013

This Term the Grade 3 students will take a look at poetry and its many different forms. Today we are going to look at Haiku poems that originated in Japan. They are a simple 3 line poem that has a set format. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables and the third and final line has 5 syllables.

This link will show you an animation clip which has a number of Haiku poems in it, we watched in class today: Sokka’s Haiku Battle

During Book Week (Starting August 19) there will be a poetry competition. A great reason to come up with your own poem, perhaps a Haiku!! Get going now!

The Sun

Posted by rosstoogood | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on June 27, 2013

This term the Year 3 students looked at the Sun and what special things it provides us on Earth. The students were asked to work in groups to come up with a plan for millions of years into the future when the Sun will burn out, for humans to survive without our current sun. The students had to present their plan to all Year 3 classes. All of 3D worked very hard on this project and managed to come up with some great ideas to help the world in the future. Plans varied from joining other planets together and setting them alight to replace the Sun, to drilling holes into the earth and filling them with lava (providing heat and light), to moving all humans and animals to another galaxy with a planet and star that could replicate Earth and the Sun, to using a massive magnifying glass to use the light from another star to help life on Earth. They were all fantastic ideas and the 3D students loved making their informative videos to outline their plans. They included using filmed news reports and powerpoint presentation, their computer skills are amazing! Well done to all the students on a fantastic Term looking at the Sun!
